Packaging Optimization

Packaging is another complex component of the supply chain for manufacturing firms. The structural design of a product’s package can affect decisions in operations, marketing, R&D, engineering and vendors. If it fails, products can be damaged; brand value can be negatively impacted; unnecessary costs can be incurred; and profitability can be diminished. Likewise, the effects of over-engineering can have negative impacts on profitability.  Because of this, a wide variety of variables must be considered in order to optimize a package for both performance and cost savings.

Provident’s Packaging Optimization services were designed to approach this challenge from two perspectives. Traditional Packaging Engineering looks to determine and improve a package’s structural design for both new and existing products; to develop package testing strategies in order to maintain compliance with all relevant standards; and to implement packaging designs through technical and engineering support to improve overall performance.

Right Pack expands the Traditional Packaging Engineering process and allows us to drive savings and sustainability improvements by harmonizing and optimizing the primary and secondary packaging in conjunction with the entire supply chain.  Through the use of various tools, algorithms and modeling techniques, we are able to move to the least amount of packaging material that can be used for any product or volume. This information not only allows us to create the most cost effective design and implementation for the product packaging, but also the ideal case/pallet configurations and warehousing/transportation logistics in order to drive packaging savings throughout the entire supply chain. Additionally, carbon footprint reductions are quantified and sustainability impact highlighted throughout the environmental variables.

Packaging Optimization Benefits

  • Cost savings captured through permanent reduction of packaging material
  • Less space and fewer rack positions utilized in warehousing
  • Improved transportation savings by shipping more product per pallet and decreasing shipment loads
  • Increased sales per square foot at retail
  • Improved environmental compliance and impact
  • Increased sales to environmentally conscious consumers and retailers
  • Improved supplier relationships and service
